Liberals side with Trump on Cuba, Iran, militarism

Mark Carney’s militarist imperialism is cascading out of control. From Cuba to Iran, Ukraine to submarines, the Liberals are pursuing belligerent, anti-democratic policy.

Tuesday Carney’s government succumbed to Trump administration pressure and abstained on a UN General Assembly resolution condemning the horrific US siege of Cuba. Even the UK, Spain and France voted with most UN member states for a debate on “the necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.”

Dovetailing with Trump’s bid to squeeze the island, Ottawa introduced a travel advisory five months ago that led to flights being cancelled and dissuaded travel to the tourist-dependent economy. Ottawa has also refused to defend Canadian corporate interests in Cuba ensnared by the ‘Donroe Doctrine’. Worse still, Ottawa has sanctioned vessels defying Trump’s patently illegal oil embargo and Canadian officials are almost certainly assisting the US in spying on Cuba.

In another moral outrage, Carney backed a new round of US attacks on Iran Wednesday. “Iran had been acting irresponsibly, attacking Saudi and Qatari targets particularly,” Carney said at the NATO summit in Turkey. “There has been a response, as appropriate. Obviously, we look to de- escalation of hostilities.”

Carney’s comment follows some 80 US strikes across multiple cities in Iran yesterday. They also as the US president made another odious anti-Iranian statement. Trump declared, “I don’t want to deal with them anymore, they’re scum. They’re sick people. And they’re led by sick people.”

In a sign of how the Carney government has reversed the aggressor/aggressed equation, Tuesday defence minister David McGuinty justified Canada spending huge sums on arms on the grounds Iran struck a target “five thousand kilometres” from its territory (Iranian officials denied responsibility for an alleged March 20 strike towards the US-UK based in Diego Garcia). According to McGuinty we need to pour ever more social resources into submarines and other arms on the grounds the “threat assessment” from Iran (and others) has changed due to Israeli/US war.

Using a purported Iranian reaction to US/Israeli aggression to justify increased military spending is disgraceful. But so is the notion that NATO plowing hundreds of billions of dollars more into to its already massive war spending is somehow “defensive”.

In their latest militarist outrage, Carney announced the purchase of up to a dozen German attack submarines on Monday. Spending $100 billion (over their lifecycle) on stealth warships is part of the government’s effort to ramp up military spending to reach NATO’s shocking 5% of GDP target.

Another part of Carney’s NATO policy is dumping ever more dollars into the most expensive proxy war in Canadian history. Tuesday Ottawa announced another $900 million in arms to assist Ukraine, which will prolong the horrific conflict. Ottawa has spent more on four years of the NATO proxy war in Ukraine than during 13 years of Canadian occupation of Afghanistan.

Mark Carney’s militarism and imperialism must be stopped.
