Donald Trump is killing more Iranians and threatening they’ll be “very little left” of Iran. Few are opposing Canada’s contribution to the aggression while many leftists are enabling it.
On Tuesday the US launched dozens of airstrikes on various targets in southern Iran, including a wedding. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, that US strike killed four, including a four-year-old, and wounded more than 50. In total, Iran says 19 were killed by the US on Tuesday.
Concurrently, the US president posted, “If the failed nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level”. Trump then added, “Waiting in the wings when it’s over, there will be very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Considering the US president’s threats, Trump was asked if he was weighing employing a nuclear weapon against Iran. He dismissed the question, but it’s wild the question deserves to be asked. At the behest of the Israeli regime — as Benjamin Netanyahu recently confirmed — the US launched a full-scale war of aggression. But due to Iran’s better than expected response the US president is caught in a strategic bind. As such, he’s flailing around between employing more bombs or economic violence and making wild threats.
In support of US/Israeli aggression Canada recently adopted more sanctions on Iran and has expelled Iranians from the country as part of Ottawa’s near unique bid to isolate that country.
At the same time, the leader of the official opposition recently did an online event with the son of the former brutal Shah. At that talk Pierre Poilievre invited “crown prince” Reza Pahlavi to come to Canada.
On Wednesday The Maple reported, “Thirteen sitting members of Parliament have taken sponsored trips to events hosted by organizations that are closely linked to an Iranian opposition group that was listed as a terrorist organization in Canada until 2012.” MPs and former ministers, including a PM, have participated in events organized by the violent, cult like Iranian Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK). It was a banned terrorist organization in Canada between 2005 and 2012.
In 2012, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency cited Irwin Cotler, alongside Alan Dershowitz and Elie Wiesel, as prominent pro-Israel activists who worked with Iranians dissidents to convince the US State Department to remove the MEK from the US terrorism list, which paved the way for Ottawa to follow suit. In 2014 Cotler invited MEK leaderMaryam Rajavi, to speak at his Iran Accountability Week on Parliament Hill.
As part of Cotler’s Iran Accountability Week, the Parliament launched the Iranian Political Prisoner Global Advocacy Project and adopted an NDP-led motion to make September 1 National Day of Solidarity with political prisoners in Iran. On Tuesday Cotler’s Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights released a statement marking National Day of Solidarity with political prisoners in Iran. It noted: “Following mass murder in January, it has accelerated its brutal execution campaign against political prisoners. States—including Canada—have a moral responsibility and legal obligations to act: to work to protect all political prisoners in Iran and to support the human rights and democratic aspirations of the Iranian people.”
As fanatical genocidal Jewish supremacists use prisoners in Iran as a cover for ever more violence against that country, many on the left have recently posted about “political prisoners” in Iran. Over the past ten days anti-war activist Matthew Behrens has posted more than a dozen times (about all his posts) to Facebook about Iranian prisoners. At the same time as Behrens — and many others on the left — have promoted a public letter in an the English language liberal imperialist Guardian that ‘two sides’ Iranian prisoners and US/Israeli aggression, he’s ignored a concurrent Iranian Canadian Congress letter to the prime minister criticizing Canada’s new sanctions and support for a war of aggression.
Canada has severed diplomatic relations with Tehran, stolen its diplomatic assets, listed the country as a state sponsor of terror and adopted several dozen rounds of sanctions against that country as part of a Zionist/US empire campaign to dominate the region. The central reason for Washington and Tel Aviv’s hostility towards Tehran is the government’s backing of Palestinian and other groups resisting Zionism and imperialism.
Even as Donald Trump threatens to destroy its civilization or leave “very little left” of Iran, many on the Canadian left effectively justify, or at least enable, the killing and destruction there. It’s like the imperial world order has a switch it turns on that activates liberal impulses in some ‘on the left’ that compels them to discuss the faults of Empire’s enemies at a time that just happens to suit the agenda of imperialism.
What’s wrong with these leftists? When will they ever learn?
