Does Ottawa support Kurdish ground invasion of Iran?

The US and Israel are pushing their proxies to invade Iran and foment unimaginable chaos. Canada has played a small part in bolstering these forces.

On Sunday the US president called the leaders of two Kurdish factions based in Iraq. Donald Trump wants groups the US has long cultivated to invade Iran from their base in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan. In “CIA ‘plans to arms Kurdish militias to fight Iran’, CNN reported Tuesday that the US intelligence agency is giving arms and other assistance to Kurdish groups. The information was confirmed by other outlets with Ynet publishing “Israel could launch ground invasion of Iran with Kurdish support, sources say”. The Jewish supremacist state has longstanding ties to Kurdish groups and has been bombing Iranian military forces in western Iran to enable a Kurdish invasion. Tuesday UK ITV News also reported, “since last year, weapons have been smuggled into western Iran to arm thousands of Kurdish volunteers. They are expected to begin a ground operation within days.”

A Kurdish ground invasion could spur cataclysmic levels of violence. But from the perspective messianic Christian and other supporters of Greater Israel, death and destruction is the aim. Israel’s preferred outcome in this war isn’t simply to overthrow the government in Tehran but to Balkanize Iran to further its near complete hegemony over the region.

Ottawa has long supported the Iraqi Kurds. Between 2014 and 2019 two hundred Canadian special forces provided training and combat support to Kurdish forces in Iraq who were often accused of ethnic cleansing areas of the country they captured. The Canadian troops openly promoted Kurdish independence with a controversy erupting over their sporting the Kurdish flag on their uniform.

At a diplomatic level Ottawa has also promoted the ethnic break up of Iraq. In 2014 Canada established a diplomatic post (quasi embassy) in Erbil even though Kurdistan is not a recognized state and the Kurds don’t have similar representation in Ottawa.

While then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his respect for the 2017 Kurdish independence referendum, Israel was the country to openly back the succession bid. That year prominent Canadian Zionist Irwin Cotler joined his close friend Alan Dershowitz in establishing the Jewish Coalition for Kurdistan.

Divided up by the colonial borders, the Kurds have repeatedly been used as shock troops of imperialism. History appears to be repeating itself.

Another group that has been used by imperialism in Iran is the MEK. Backed by Saudi Arabia and Israel, the MEK have carried out Mossad assassination operations and helped Israeli forces target Iranian officials. Along with Kurdish groups, the MEK likely instigated much of the January violence, which our media frames as simply state repression of peacefull protesters. (MEK discredited itself with most Iranians by supporting Iraq’s 1980 aggression against Iran. Canada sold arms to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq during the devastating eight-year war designed to subvert Iran’s revolution.)

While the MEK was listed as a terrorist organization in Canada until 2012, Canada has deepened its ties to the cultish organization recently. The MEK has recently been promoted by former interim Conservative party leader Candice Bergen, Liberal MP Judy Sgro and Senator Michael L. MacDonald. Stephen Harper, John Baird, Tony Clement and other Canadian political figures have also attended MEK conferences. In the fall, close MEK ally Judy Sgro and Conservative MP Michael Cooper — co-chairs of Canadian Parliamentary Committee of Friends of a Democratic Iran – organized “Iran at a Crossroads: Geopolitical Shifts and Human Rights Realities.” At that conference MEK head Maryam Rajavi promoted her Ten-Point Plan for Iran.

Through NORAD, a base in Kuwait and officer exchanges with US forces in the region Canadia’s military has contributed to this war. Mark Carney also expressed “support” for the US/Israeli aggression, which he has partly walked back, and Canada has imposed a slew of measures to isolate Iran diplomatically and weaken its economy.

As the US/Israel seek to spur a cataclysmic ground invasion it’s important to look at Canada’s contribution. Is Canada assisting their diplomatic or military plan with the possible ground invasion from Iraqi Kurdistan?

Please email the defence minister and opposition critics to call for the withdrawal of all Canadian soldiers assisting the US/Israeli aggression on Iran.
