“Any person who, within Canada, recruits or otherwise induces any person or body of persons to enlist or to accept any commission or engagement in the armed forces of any foreign state or other armed forces operating in that state is guilty of an offence.” Foreign Enlistment Act
Should Gil Troy and Linda Adams be investigated for violating Canada’s Foreign Enlistment Act? How about the parents of other Canadians who have joined the Israeli military?
Recently Find IDF Soldiers was created to detail Canadians who’ve enlisted with the Israeli military. In response to the website listing his four children (Aviv Troy, Dina Troy, Lia Troy and Yoni Troy), prominent McGill professor Gil Troy wrote “Mocking the Canadian-IDF enemies list: Entering Bizarro world”. In his Jerusalem Post commentary Gil wrote, “Our universe has turned topsy-turvy, with Palestinians’ global amen chorus romanticizing Hamas mass murderers while trying to demonize and criminalize Israel’s heroic soldiers.”
Gil Troy speaks regularly at events put on by the Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto Jewish Federations as well as its advocacy agent the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. Gil’s wife, Linda Adams, is the daughter of deceased Montreal billionaire Marcel Adams and her brother, Sylvan, is “self-appointed ambassador-at-large for Israel” and an aggressive proponent of suppressing anti-genocide students at McGill (where he’s a major donor).
Gil has written celebrating each of his children for joining the occupation force. In a 2013 Jerusalem Post article headlined “To my daughter, upon joining the IDF”, Gil stated, “You did it. This morning, you marched off to the Army. …we are so proud of your decision to serve. You know what you are sacrificing. In today’s Israel your two-year gift to the Jewish people is essentially voluntary.” While Gil is still a “distinguished scholar” at McGill, the family appears to have largely moved to Israel in 2013. In the 2017 article “A letter to my son as he enlists in the Israeli army”, Gil promotes the colonialist character of another of his child’s military service. He wrote, “Once, the Colt .45 revolver was the Wild West’s ‘Peacemaker’; today, you and your buddies are the Middle East’s peacemakers – protecting the civilized world against Islamist terrorism.”
Six months into Israel’s genocide in Gaza Gil made it clear he believed all Jewish Zionist parents should teach their children to promote Israeli military violence. In an April 2024 Jewish News Syndicate interview Gil noted, “Parents should instill as much Jewish identity, values and history in their children as possible with an understanding ‘that an attack on Israel is an attack on them,’ Troy said. ‘We’re going to raise a generation of Zionist Jews with fluency and identity,’ he said. ‘New Jews with the willingness to defend themselves when necessary.’”
In a 2020 commentary on his third child’s enlistment Gil mentions that he taught his kids to revere Israeli soldiers. He wrote, “When you were kids, we often celebrated your birthdays by giving soldiers care packages. You gawked at these soldiers as if they were larger than life. All four of my miracles, our kids, look larger than life to me. As you go to serve your nation, your people, and the civilized world, so calmly, gracefully, naturally, despite these turbulent times, you loom ever larger.”
Yoni Troy suggests his parent’s instilled a desire to join the Israeli military at a young age. Yoni declared, “I always dreamed of serving as an officer” in the Israeli military. (Having finished his military service two months earlier, Aviv Troy rushed back from Sri Lanka in October 2023 to participate in the genocide in Gaza. If he returns to this country he should be investigated under Canada’s Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act.)
To successfully pursue a parent for inducing their child to join the Israeli military it would probably require someone willing to testify against their parents. How fascinating that would be. Imagine a twenty something discussing growing up in a Jewish supremacist household where they received IOF soldiers costumes, sweaters and other paraphernalia. They would describe how their parents enrolled them in Jewish schools and camps that promoted the Israeli military as well as being told the Israeli military defends the Jewish people, failing to mention the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
It would be quite the sight to see a child expose all the ways their parents encouraged them to leave a comfortable life in Toronto or Montreal to join a brutal genocidal force.
Is anyone willing to stand up and do the right thing for humanity?
Please take a minute to email Canada’s new attorney general and RCMP commissioner to investigate those who’ve potentially violated Canada’s Foreign Enlistment Act.
