Despite Zionist attacks, pro-Palestine momentum grows

Despite establishment and media hostility, Canada’s Palestinian solidarity movement has shown its strength in recent days. Here are ten gains:

  • In the Vancouver elections, the pro-genocide incumbent mayor was defeated on Saturday. Pro-Palestinian left party COPE won all four of their council, as well as school and parks board, seats. Sean Orr, who played a central role in taking down anti-Palestinian provincial minister Selena Robinson, and has been smeared by the Jewish supremacist lobby, garnered the most votes of any city councillor.
  • On Wednesday Manitoba became the first Canadian province to recognize Anti-Palestinian Racism across government.
  • In the Burnaby (Vancouver suburb) election those who adopted an anti-genocide motion, including making the city of 300,000 the first Canadian municipality an “apartheid free” zone, won handily.
  • After significant criticism, Public Safety Canada partially backtracked from a recent report claiming anti-Zionism is anti-Jewish. They responded to the pressure by writing the National Council of Canadian Muslims that a recent “report was not, and is not, intended to suggest that all criticism of Zionism, Israeli government policies, or the State of Israel is antisemitic, nor is it intended to limit or discourage lawful political expression or public debate.” Additionally, the letter to the NCCM suggested there’s no enforceable application of the odious IHRA definition.
  • While there’s lots to dislike about the Parti Québécois, they recently won government with a commitment to suspend operations of Quebec’s office in Tel Aviv.
  • McGill undergraduate students recently endorsed a resolution calling for the academic boycott of McGill’s exchange program with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
  • Two dozen Zionist charities are reportedly being investigated by the Canada Revenue Agency for violating the Income Tax Act.
  • On Sunday foreign affairs minister Anita Anand condemned a violent attack by Zionist settlers targeting European diplomats in the occupied West Bank. Last month Ottawa joined 11 countries in banning trade with illegal Israeli settlements.
  • With protests in many cities over ten thousand took to the streets last week to mark three years of genocide. Despite significant vilification and repression, there are still regular pro-Palestinian rallies and marches in dozens of Canadian cities.
  • The recently released annual study by the western government funded Alliance of Democracies found Israel is the least popular country on Earth. Two thirds of Canadians have a very unfavourable or unfavourable view of Israel.

The popular response to Canada’s support for genocide is the most significant and sustained internationally focussed social movement in this country’s history. Up against deeply entrenched Zionist power, the movement continues to notch gains and shift public opinion.
