Mark Carney calling the US/Israeli aggression “worth it” reflects his colonial antipathy towards Iranians. But Canada’s prime minister not only justified belligerence and the continued isolation of Iran, he’s laying the ground for greater aggression by promoting the absurd notion that Tehran is hiring teenage Torontonians to shoot synagogues.
In response to a question about the US-Iran deal to end the war, Carney called the aggression “worth it”. The PM echoed Donald Trump’s absurd claim that the aggression had stopped Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Both leaders see no problem with 3,500 Iranian civilians killed, including 160 schoolgirls in one attack, during the aggression. Over 30,000 Iranians were injured in the bombings and millions had property destroyed or their lives upended.
In a subsequent interview Carney said Ottawa was willing to assist with the implementation of the US-Iran deal, which is a positive declaration. At the same time, however, the PM categorically rejected Canada participating in the (rather vague) $300 billion reconstruction accord that’s part of the détente. Why?
Canada has taken Iranian assets and adopted a slew of unilateral sanctions against that country. Even if Canada hadn’t violated international law in seeking to cripple Iran economically, why shouldn’t Ottawa support Canadian capitalists investing in Iran to enable peace? Carney promotes Canadian investment elsewhere with far less laudable aims.
Carney’s categorical rejection of Canadian participation in reconstruction reflects his ongoing demonization of a country long targeted by Zionism and US imperialism. Over the past decade and a half Ottawa has adopted a slew of measures targeting Iran for a unique level of isolation and since the full-scale US/Israeli aggression Ottawa has released dozens of statements criticizing Iranian responses, but not a single comment condemning the aggressors.
A week ago, Canada signed a statement backed by the US and 20 other countries to “condemn the lethal plotting and other malign actions in Europe, North America and Australia by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Intelligence Organisation, Quds Force and Ministry of Intelligence and Security, including those against Iranian dissidents, journalists and Jewish and Israeli communities and interests. … The relationship between Iranian security services and international and local criminal groups is long standing. Their use of these groups is deplorable… We also condemn the recent campaign of attacks across Europe targeting Jewish communities, Iranian journalists and US interests, claimed by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI) and supported by their intermediaries.”
Five days after the release of this statement the Toronto police announced that they suspected teenagers were paid to fire on more than two dozen sites including Jewish institutions and the US consulate. Many media outlets connected the announcement to Iran even though there’s basically no evidence of a connection as author Nora Loreto has explained.
On Wednesday Secretary of State for Combatting Crime Ruby Sahota said a “foreign entity” hired gunmen to shoot at synagogues in Toronto. Again, the Globe and Mail story about it suggests Iranian involvement.
In response to Canadaland head Jesse Brown blaming Iran for the shootings of Jewish institutions, professor Sabreena Ghaffar-Siddiqui noted, “OK. Big bad Iran hires little teenage gunmen and tells them – ‘we want you to target Jewish buildings, but no killing Jews ok, just gun shots at night on empty synagogues to make it look like Jews are under attack. This will help us win the war against Israel.’ 🫠 Sure, buddy. Jesse isn’t stupid, he already knows the ‘teenage gunmen’ were sponsored by Mossad because an antisemitism crisis in the west only benefits Israel.”
In another post about “who is paying people to shoot up synagogues in Toronto” Zachary Foster adds “some things to consider”:
“1. Israel benefits when Jews around the world are targeted.
“2. Israel has a long history of targeting Jewish sites (Palestine in the 1920s & 1940s, Iraq in 1950s, Iran in 2026) in false flag operations.
“3. Israel is scared of losing their leverage over world Jewry.
“4. Israel aggressively seeks to create pro-Israel governments around the world via the antisemitism industrial complex.
“5. Israel supporters also frequently carry out false flag antisemitic operations against Jews.
“If I was a betting man, I’d bet these attacks are the work of Israeli intelligence or Israel enthusiasts. This is further suggested by the nature of the attacks: they targeted the exteriors of buildings, no people were hurt or even targeted. The shooters were bought and paid for. They are trying to frame Iran, yet no evidence is presented in either of these articles to suggest Iran was involved. The theory that Iran was involved defies everything we know about Iranian foreign policy, Iranian strategy, Iran’s state ideology.”
Mark Carney’s support for the murderous US/Israeli aggression against Iran is odious. Let’s hope the peace deal holds.
