Mark Carney has backed US aggression against Iran while Pierre Poilievre openly hopes the illegal attack will lead to government collapse. In other words, dominant Canadian politicians support a genocidal ethno-supremacist state of 9 million in its bid to dominate a region of half a billion.
After nine days of Israeli attacks that have killed nearly 500 Iranians, US forces dropped 14 massive bunker buster bombs and launched 30 Tomahawks missiles against Iranian nuclear facilities. Last night’s attacks are an illegal act of aggression that also violate international law regarding targeting nuclear facilities.
This morning Mark Carney posted in support of US criminality, echoing the absurd claim that the aggression is about nuclear arms. The prime minister posted, “Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security, and Canada has been consistently clear that Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. While U.S. military action taken last night was designed to alleviate that threat, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile. Stability in the region is a priority.”
The idea that this is about an Iranian nuclear arms program is absurd. Instead, this is about Israel’s and US power to dominate the region. Israeli officials have been claiming Iran is on the cusp of acquiring nuclear weapons for three decades and in recent months both US intelligence and the International Atomic Energy Agency have said there’s no evidence of this. Additionally, it’s Donald Trump — at Benjamin Netanyahu’s urging — that ripped up the successful Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) Iran nuclear agreement in 2018.
The two countries that have attacked Iran are nuclear armed states that have sought to block any effort to develop a Middle East Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone. Most countries in the region have supported a nuclear free zone, which exist elsewhere, but Israel wants to maintain its 90 nuclear weapons.
Ottawa has said it supports a nuclear weapons free Middle East but has opposed organizing a regional conference on the establishment of such a zone. Canada also opposes the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which two thirds of the world has backed, and in 2020 Canada joined the US, Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau in voting against a resolution calling on Israel to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and “renounce possession of nuclear weapons”. One hundred and fifty-three countries backed the call.
There is little evidence Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, but even if it did it wouldn’t be a major threat to the US or Israel. It would, however, slightly weaken Israeli and US hegemony over the region. In effect, Carney is supporting the Israel/US bid to weaken Iran, even balkanize it, because he believes a European colonial outpost of 9 million should dominate the region of 500 million.
The leader of Canada’s Conservative Party openly hopes the empire and Jewish supremacist state’s actions lead to government collapse. Sunday morning Pierre Poilievre posted, “Allowing the genocidal regime in Iran to get a nuclear weapon would have been reckless. American and Israeli actions to stop it from getting one are 100% justified.
“Hopefully the brave Iranian people will rise up and put an end to this appalling regime so the people can live in freedom and the world can live in peace.
“Our government must also protect Canadians from violence spilling into our communities at home and stop intimidation and foreign interference by the Iranian regime targeting Canada’s Jewish and Persian communities.”
Poilievre supports killing or ethnically cleansing everyone in Gaza. And the sick warmonger also backs killing everyone in the region to maintain Israeli hegemony. As of publication NDP leader Don Davies, NDP foreign critic Heather Mcpherson or Bloc Quebecois leader Yves-François Blanchet had yet to comment on Donald Trump bombing Iran. That’s Canada for you.
