Levi flouts Canadian law against incitement to genocide

Hampstead mayor Jeremy Levi should be charged for inciting genocide. As Palestinians are starved to death in the most egregious crime of this century, Levi is calling for Israel’s final solution in Gaza.

On Monday the mayor of the inner Montreal suburb posted, “If the rumours are true, then good — it’s about time. Israel should move forward with full occupation and annexation of Gaza. It’s been nearly two years, and if the Palestinians truly wanted peace, they would’ve handed over the hostages long ago. But they haven’t — because they choose war. Israel has every right to act decisively. No more half-measures. No more waiting. The world needs to understand: no more arguing, no more explanations. Full throttle. No apologies.”

Canadian law criminalizes incitement to genocide. According to Section 318 (1) of the criminal code, “Every person who advocates or promotes genocide is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than five years. In this section, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy in whole or in part any identifiable group, namely, (a) killing members of the group; or (b) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction.”

Similarly, the Rome Statute, which Canada has signed, also criminalizes incitement to genocide. It states, “A person may be found guilty of direct and public incitement to commit genocide if he or she directly and publicly incited the commission of genocide (the actus reus) and had the intent to directly and publicly incite others to commit genocide (the mens rea).”

Levi is clearly inciting genocide. The mayor of Canada’s most Jewish city is echoing Israeli politicians who are calling to wipe out everyone in Gaza. In an extreme example, Moshe Feiglin’s recently noted, “Just as Hitler vowed to eliminate every Jew and said he couldn’t live as long as one Jew remained, I say: we cannot live in this land as long as one Muslim remains in Gaza. They must be eliminated.”

Levi has repeatedly expressed his support for genocide. In response to reports that Mark Carney was going to recognize Palestine Levi posted, “If he dares push for Canadian recognition of a Palestinian state in the aftermath of October 7, then Israel has every right—morally and strategically—to annex all of Gaza.”

A few days after Randy Fine sparked a massive controversy by posting that Palestinians can “starve away” Levi celebrated the US Congressman. Fine responded to a Levi post about people protesting the Israeli flag flying at Hamstead’s city hall with “hero”, which Levi retweeted and also responded, “means a lot coming from you.” A few days earlier Levi celebrated Fine’s aggressive dismissal of anti-genocide protesters.

A year ago the mayor posted, “Israel must strike first and strike hard, eradicating every security threat with relentless force. The mission must be relentless and unyielding until every adversary, including the civilian supporters, fully grasps the magnitude of their defeat.” Two months into the genocide in Gaza Levi told me he’d back Israel killing 100,000 children because “good needs to prevail over evil”.

In response to the recent statement, Davide “criticofpolecon” posted “I got arrested for using a turn of phrase meanwhile a mayor in my own city is tweeting about the final solution.” Sixteen months ago Davide posted a TikTok video calling on people to message then-Minister of Immigration Marc Miller’s office in which he concluded, “It would also be great if you, I don’t know, call or email or fax or just, you know, blow up Marc Miller’s office to make sure he, his workers, they can’t get anything done.” He was charged for the common expression “blow up”.

For my part, I spent five days in jail in part because of the work of Levi’s close ally, Neil Oberman. Montreal’s leading ‘lawfare’ lawyer pushed the police to arrest me for criticizing Dahlia Kurtz on X and Oberman is now suing me for $150 000+ on Kurtz’ behalf.

While the legal system targets critics of genocide, I’ve sought to hold Levi accountable. At the 2024 Israel day rally in Montreal I told Levi he was a “Jewish supremacist genocidal freak” and on another occasion I asked him if he thought Jewish lives were more important than non-Jewish lives.

The mayor is clearly threatened by my bid to lead the NDP. Over a three-day period after I announced my candidacy three of Levi’s four posts on X were about my bid to the lead the NDP. In one he retweeted former Jewish Defence League head Meir Weinstein stating, “The Israel Now campaign against Yves Engler for the leadership of the NDP is gaining momentum. Important political leaders are now active on this matter. And, Yves Engler is starting to panic according to his most recent posts. It’s very simple, either the NDP drops him or changes their name to the Nazi Party of Canada.”

As part of my bid to lead the NDP I’m calling on the police to investigate Levi for inciting genocide. I’m also calling on Justice Minister Sean Fraser to okay a case against Levi.

Canada must uphold its laws even against powerful politicians. Prosecute Jeremy Levi.
