While Canadians overwhelmingly reject aggression on Iran, Israelis have descended into a militarist frenzy.
Two and a half years into the genocide in Gaza, Jewish Israeli political leaders overwhelmingly call for more to be killed, infrastructure destroyed and ecological destruction. A Financial Times article headlined “Benjamin Netanyahu’s rivals compete to outdo him over Iran” notes:
“Even by the standards of wartime Israeli politics, it was a hawkish set of proposals: Israel should destroy all Iran’s oil-fields and flatten the energy infrastructure on the island that functions as Tehran’s main oil export hub. But the demands did not come from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, or his ultranationalist allies. Instead, they came from Yair Lapid, the silver-haired former premier and television host who heads the centrist Yesh Atid party, and draws much of his support from liberal bastions such as Tel Aviv. Lapid’s message reflects how the fight in Israeli politics, for all Zionist parties in government and opposition, is not over whether to confront Iran but over who will prosecute the war better than Netanyahu.
“Israel’s offensive has higher public support than almost any other issue in the country’s fractious politics — even after two and a half years of multifront fighting that has disrupted daily life for millions of Israelis. Although Israel’s Arab parties staunchly oppose the war with Iran, polls suggest more than 90 per cent of Jewish Israelis back it, and the country’s Zionist opposition groups have fallen in behind it in unison.”
Soon after the launch of the war an Israel Democracy Institute poll found a whopping 93% of Jewish Israelis support aggression against Iran (26% of “Arab Israelis” backed it). Incredibly, 73% of Jewish Israelis openly admitted to not caring about the suffering of Iranian civilians.
The contrast with the Canadian public is remarkable. According to an Angus Reid poll, Canadians are seven times more likely to oppose, than support, getting involved in the US/Israeli war. Seventy-four percent of respondents said Canada’s military should not be involved in the conflict with only 10% wanting to participate.
Another poll that asked a slightly different question found similar results. Sixty-eight percent of respondents told Leger pollsters Canada should remain neutral in the war with a quarter saying Ottawa should back the US and Israel. Among the 18-24 cohort, 20 per cent of respondents thought Ottawa should “politically support” Iran prompting the National Post to declare: “1 in 5 young Canadians say Ottawa should back Iranian regime over U.S.”
The fanatically Zionist and imperialist newspaper bemoaned the lack of support for our ‘ally’. But the US public is only slightly more supportive of the aggression than Canadians. YouGov reported, “Only 33% of Americans strongly or somewhat support the war with Iran, while 56% oppose it. 61% want to prioritize ending the war as quickly as possible while only 24% would prioritize continuing to fight until all U.S. objectives have been achieved.”
Public opinion elsewhere in the anglosphere is similar. A poll found that 57 per cent of the British opposed the war on Iran with only 18 per cent supporting it.
Jewish Israelis are an outlier. Yet some ‘leftists’ still bend over backwards to blame “Netanyahu” for the belligerence in a transparent effort to exculpate Jewish Israelis and their advocates that dominate North American Jewish institutions.
In a post labelling Joe Kent, who just resigned as director of the National Counterterrorism Center to oppose the devastating war, as a “far-right antisemite”, famed author Rebecca Solnit writes, “Here’s a striking piece of the stupid: people say Israel as shorthand for the Israeli government, and then they pretend that all Israelis are Jews (only about 75% are), and that all Israelis support or are just indistinguishable from their government (which lots of protests and some peace movements make clear they are not). For people in the USA who are confident they are not one and the same as the Trump Administration, this should not be hard. But it apparently is.”
But it’s Solnit who is being “stupid”. Jewish Israelis back their government’s bid to kill countless thousands in the hopes of fully subordinating a region of half a billion people to the expansionist aims of a genocidal Jewish supremacist state.
