Should we be seeking to weaken Canada’s main Jewish organizations? If you oppose authoritarianism, racism and genocide the answer is obvious.
On Sunday the largest Jewish organization in Canada organized a holocaust walk. United Jewish Appeal of Toronto brought out tens of thousands to “Walk for Israel” as that country pursues its final solution in Gaza. UJA Toronto’s website explained “JOIN THOUSANDS OF JEWS AND ALLIES AS WE STAND SHOULDER TO SHOULDER TO SEND A POWERFUL MESSAGE: OUR CONNECTION TO ISRAEL IS UNWAVERING.” The date for the event was chosen to celebrate “Jerusalem Day” when Israel conquered the illegally occupied east of that city in 1967.
As Israel starves Palestinians in a bid to cleanse Gaza of non-Jews, it’s hard to wrap ones’ heads around the collective depravity that would draw up to fifty thousand on to the streets 8,000 kilometres away in support of these horrors. The walk highlights the extent to which Canadian Jewry has followed their Israeli brethren down the path of a moral abyss.
A recent poll by Pennsylvania University found that one in two (47%) of Israeli Jews want to see all non-Jews killed in Gaza. Additionally, four in five (82%) want to ethnically cleanse all non-Jews from the coastal strip.
In a sign of that society’s sadism, a group of Israelis recently organized a barbecue near the Gaza border to mock those being starved kilometres away. Similarly, an army reservist doctor — who works at an Israeli hospital subsidized by Canadian charitable donations — recently compared killing Gazans to “eliminating cockroaches and other loathsome insects … within the framework of preventative medicine.”
Renowned American foreign policy scholar John Mearsheimer recently condemned, “the Nazification of Israel. They are like the Germans under Hitler.”
Canada’s Jewish community has remarkably close ties to Nazi Israel. Eighty percent of adult Canadian Jews have visited Israel, which is twice the US rate. On average, they’ve visited five times, and one in six have lived there for six months.
Sunday’s holocaust walk began from a synagogue that will likely become a bubble zone due to pressure from the increasingly fascistic Jewish Zionist establishment. Last week Toronto city council voted to restrict freedom of assembly across the city at the behest of those who don’t want to feel uncomfortable when attending events promoting Israel’s holocaust. It’s part of a nationwide attack on democratic rights in service of Israel’s crimes.
After 20 months of slaughter and starvation in Gaza, there’s been remarkably little institutional break from Zionism. Canada’s Jewish institutions remain near unanimous in promoting apartheid and genocidal Jewish supremacy. While thousands of individual Jews have turned on Israel and some of the most committed opponents of genocidal Jewish supremacy are Jewish, there’s been almost no institutional break from the official ‘Israel no matter what’ line. In the UK there was at least a group of 36 members of the Board of Deputies of British Jews who published last month a letter dissenting from the official line.
While it is clear the central institutions of Canada’s Jewish community play a critical role in defending the indefensible and thus must be weakened, has any commentator or group said as much? I’m sure if you asked, many in Independent Jewish Voices would agree privately. But has anyone stated it openly? Yes, there has been a successful campaign to revoke the “charitable” status of at least one important Jewish community organization, but much more needs to be done.
It’s difficult to succeed politically without being able to articulate a position publicly. * If you oppose authoritarianism, racism and genocide say it loud and say it proud: Canada’s Jewish Zionist institutions must be weakened.
