Should Heather McPherson be excluded from NDP leadership race?

Many on social media are suggesting that my bid to lead the NDP will be “red lighted” by the party brass. Extremist genocide proponents have even begun calling for the party to block me before the leadership race starts!

As the NDP leadership considers whether to cower to anti-Palestinian fanatics, it’s worth considering some things the party establishment’s favoured candidate has done, not me.

I have never stood to celebrate a literal Nazi.

Twenty-one months ago, Heather McPherson applauded Yaroslav Hunka for fighting in the Nazis’ 14th Waffen-SS Galicia Division, which pledged allegiance to Adolf Hitler.

Does publicly applauding a Nazi warrant exclusion from the race?

From what I can tell McPherson didn’t apologize for celebrating a Nazi. It’s likely because she’s extremely close to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, which has promoted Hunka and many other members of the 14th Waffen-SS.

I have never praised one of Canada’s leading proponents of an ongoing holocaust.

On a half dozen occasions McPherson has met or spoken at events led by Irwin Cotler. The latest incident was twenty months into the Gaza holocaust on June 11. In 2022, McPherson celebrated the genocidal maniac, writing, “this afternoon, Professor Irwin Cotler and I spoke about how we can work together to protect humans rights in Canada and around the world. I am grateful to him for sharing his wisdom with me.” I couldn’t find any evidence of McPherson ever criticizing Cotler for a half century of campaigning in favour of Israel’s apartheid and genocide.

I have never advocated for Canada’s ‘carbon bomb’.

McPherson supports Canada’s most egregious contribution to the ever-worsening climate crisis. She supported Ottawapaying for and taking over the Trans Mountain pipeline. The $35 billion pipeline has helped expand extraction of Canada’s heavy carbon emitting tar sands.

No matter how thoroughly I’m vetted the NDP won’t find anything remotely as objectionable as McPherson’s above-mentioned positions. If you believe party insiders should exclude candidates based on controversial public statements or positions, start by calling for Heather McPherson to be excluded from the race. If you believe that party members should decide what ideas/policies deserve support then back an open leadership race with multiple forums to debate the issues.

Please email NDP leaders to reject genocide supporters’ effort to determine who is allowed to run for party leader.
