Tax subsidies for schools promoting Israel’s military questioned

Some Montreal schools have long promoted genocidal Jewish supremacy. In a big step forward Quebec politicians are finally questioning why all taxpayers subsidize the illegal inducement of kids into a murderous foreign military.

Thursday La Presse published an investigation detailing Israeli military involvement with two Montreal Jewish schools. Herzliah and Bialik schools have had at least 14 different visits from active or former Israeli soldiers since October 2023. A school gym is also used to teach students Israeli military combat methods. La Presse quotes academic Yakov Rabkin suggesting the schools may be violating the Foreign Enlistment Act, which criminalizes “inducing” Canadians to join another country’s military.

The two schools received $8 million from Quebec’s ministry of education in 2024. Not reported by La Presse, they also receive millions of dollars more in subsidy as registered charities or through donations from the taxpayer subsidized Combined Jewish Appeal Montreal.

The CAQ minister, Quebec Solidaire, and Parti Québécois all expressed concern about the La Presse report. The Canadian Press, Montreal Gazette and Le Devoir have also published follow-up stories on a scandal I wrote about previously. The Jerusalem Post article quoted a Jewish Federation/Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs Twitter post blaming me for La Presse’s investigation stating, “For several months, Jewish schools in Quebec have been subject to misleading allegations, particularly stemming from a video disseminated by activist Yves Engler. Seeing La Presse join in this dynamic by presenting, from a military angle, cultural and athletic extracurricular activities, funded without public funds and comparable to those organized in many schools, contributes to fueling conspiracy theories targeting the Jewish community.”

I’ve written and spoken repeatedly about publicly subsidized Montreal private schools promoting the Israeli military and Zionism. The La Presse report repeats some of what I wrote about Bialik, which is Canada’s oldest Jewish day school and officially known as the Jewish People’s and Peretz Schools (JPPS-Bialik). My story from last year noted:

“Today, an Israeli flag flies outside the school, and its gym is painted in the colors of that country. A teenage Israeli Shinshinim volunteer is seconded to JPPS-Bialik and, in 2018, the Canadian Jewish News published a story about the school ‘introducing what its creator says may be the first formal course on Israel conducted entirely in Hebrew at a Jewish day school.’

“During the past 18 months of genocide, its Facebook page has reported on the school participating in the March for Israel in Washington DC and a March for Jerusalem and Israel Day rally in Montreal. Students have also raised money for an Israel Relief Fund and arch-Zionists Neil Oberman, Loay Alshareef and Shabbos Kestenbaum have spoken to students.

“While largely funded by Canadian and Quebec taxpayers, the school’s Facebook page describes ‘honoring’ Israeli soldiers who defend ‘our homeland’ and ‘our beloved homeland of Israel.’ The school also brings in former Israeli soldiers to speak to students in what may be a bid to ‘induce’ graduates to join a foreign military.”

My article also pointed to previous La Presse reporting on Jewish schools benefiting from tax credits for “religious” (heavily Zionist) instruction. “JPPS-Bialik is a leading beneficiary of this questionable subsidy. The paper’s analysis suggests the school receives at least $5 million in public funds annually,” noted the article.

I concluded:

“This is outrageous. The public should not give a cent to this school. Moreover, it needs to be investigated for promoting racism and violating Canada’s Foreign Enlistment Act.

To stop Israel from killing more Palestinian children, we need to upend an education system in this country that promotes genocidal Jewish supremacy.”

I’m proud of my commentary and only wish major media had followed my lead much earlier.
